CHAPTER 22

THE CREEK

Bridge

“Let me give you a proper tour,” Kyra said, gliding ahead. “I truly love it here. It was a harsh change at first, but once I got here, that didn’t seem to matter anymore. This is home.”

We stepped into the light of the glen. It was as if the forest were giving this special spot a permanent hug. As the sun began to set it filtered through the trees, sending long shadowy stripes across the ground.

“Your food here is different, but we’ve found the nutrition we need. Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

She stopped by the closest garden where corn and other vegetables grew. “We’re all a little different. Like your people, I think. Your Houses all have different needs?”

“Yes. That’s right.”

“Well the nymphs and other nature-connected beings are doing well. But the spirit-world creatures, the demons and beasts, are not. There’s something not quite right.”

“What’s happening to them?”

We continued walking through the various garden beds as we talked. “Weakness mostly. Which isn’t making any of them more pleasant. They’ve also been withdrawing. Like Thrax. He spends more time working and sulking in the shadows than any of them.”

My heart beat faster at the mere mention of his name. “Are you sure it’s food and not water, or sunlight, or connection to the Plane causing the issues?”

Kyra shrugged. “We’re not sure of anything yet. Only that sometimes it’s worse than others, and sex seems to help.”

My ears perked at that. “Sex?”

“Pleasure. It lessens the weakness for a while but doesn’t fix it.”

“Sounds like a chemical imbalance of some kind. My sister studies things like this. Maybe she’d have some ideas.”

Kyra hummed as she ran her fingers over pink flowers, their petals growing and brightening at her touch. “Will they let you contact her while you’re here?”

“For emergencies, yes. And this sounds like an emergency to me.”

Kyra flitted on, taking me through a vine-covered archway and into what looked like a room made of flowers. “We make all our own food here. Well, with the exception of a few items the Manor provides. Something called steak? And bacon. The demons love bacon.”

“Do you like bacon?”

She wrinkled her nose. “I only eat what I grow. But demons and beasts need far more calories than I can provide them. Come, let me show you my favorite place.” She scurried out another archway and around the house.

I followed her into the trees and was shocked to find a small waterfall. “This is beautiful!”

“It gets better.” She waved again before disappearing down the rocks, following the water until the lake appeared out of nowhere.

I couldn’t help but to gasp in surprise. I had no idea the house was so close to the lake. “Why is this your favorite place?”

Kyra waded into the shallow water of the creek just above the lake. “Because it has a little bit of everything. Trees, wind, sun, shadow, grass, flowers, rocks, and water.” She twirled her hand and sent a tendril of water flying up to hydrate the pink flowers growing just above the rocks.
